It's mating season and the American Oystercatchers (Haematopus palliatus) are frisky. These beautiful black shorebirds, sporting their trademark orange bills, nest along the Atlantic Coast, including the barrier islands of South Carolina. They are generally monogamous, sometimes establishing pair bonds that last for many years. These two called back and forth for several minutes before finally "hooking up" and walking into the dunes together to chill out and look for a suitable nesting site.
